Where to Stay Inside Yellowstone National Park

Which of the park’s 5 lodging areas actually fits your trip — geysers, wildlife, the lake, or the most central base. Compared honestly, area by area.

Old Faithful Mammoth Canyon Village Lake Yellowstone Roosevelt

Quick Facts Before You Book

  • Book up to 13 months out. Yellowstone National Park Lodges opens reservations on the 5th of each month for the same month the following year — a different window than Grand Teton’s 12-month system, so don’t mix them up if you’re booking both parks.
  • Two lodges stay open in winter — Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Old Faithful Snow Lodge. Mammoth is the only one reachable by regular car; Snow Lodge requires snowcoach or snowmobile access.
  • No AC, no TV, often no WiFi at nearly every lodge in the park, including the priciest ones.
  • Prefer a gateway town instead? See our Where to Stay Around Yellowstone guide covering Gardiner, West Yellowstone, Cody, and Jackson.

💡 Pro Tip: Two Different Booking Windows

If you’re pairing Yellowstone with Grand Teton on the same trip, remember they’re booked through two completely separate systems on two different rolling windows — Yellowstone at 13 months through Yellowstone National Park Lodges, Grand Teton at 12 months through GTLC. Mark both dates on your calendar separately. There’s also a sixth option worth knowing: Grant Village, near West Thumb, is the Yellowstone lodging closest to Grand Teton National Park — a good pick if you’re routing between both parks. See our Where to Stay Inside Grand Teton guide for that half of the trip, and our 5-day Yellowstone & Grand Teton itinerary for how we route both parks together.

Which Yellowstone area should I pick for my first visit?

Canyon Village is usually the best overall choice for a first trip — it offers easy access to Hayden Valley, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Yellowstone Lake, and Norris Geyser Basin while minimizing drive times. If seeing Old Faithful is your top priority, stay in the Old Faithful area instead.

Where should I stay to see wolves and bears?

The Roosevelt area is the best inside-the-park base for Lamar Valley wildlife — it’s the closest lodging to where wolf and bear sightings are most common, and it’s also the only area offering horseback rides, stagecoach adventures, and the Old West Dinner Cookout.

Can I stay inside Yellowstone in winter?

Only two lodges stay open through winter: Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel (reachable by car) and Old Faithful Snow Lodge (reachable only by snowcoach or snowmobile).
