DAY 01

Gatlinburg — Arrival & Downtown

Your home base for the full trip

1

Check into Gatlinburg

Stay here the entire trip — it’s the most central base for every stop on this itinerary and saves you from switching hotels mid-week.

Home base
2

Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies

A relaxed first stop after travel, right in downtown Gatlinburg.

3

Gatlinburg SkyPark & downtown shops

SkyPark’s SkyBridge offers sweeping mountain views; downtown is walkable with shops and restaurants for an easy first evening.

“One home base, five days of completely different adventures — and we never had to pack a bag twice.”
DAY 02

Cades Cove

Wildlife & history — 45–60 min from Gatlinburg

1

11-mile scenic loop drive

The park’s best spot for wildlife viewing — bears, deer, and wild turkeys are common. Allow extra time in summer for traffic on the loop.

Wildlife
2

Historic sites along the loop

Preserved cabins, churches, and a working gristmill are scattered throughout Cades Cove — easy stops without leaving the car for long.

“We saw bears, deer, and turkeys before lunch — all from an 11-mile loop that cost nothing to drive.”
DAY 03

Kuwohi & Newfound Gap

The highest point in the Smokies

1

Kuwohi Observation Tower

The highest point in the park at 6,643 feet, with 360° mountain views. A paved 0.5-mile walk to the tower — short but steep uphill.

Highest point
2

Newfound Gap

Sits right on the Tennessee–North Carolina state line, with the Rockefeller Memorial and some of the best sunrise and sunset views in the park.

3

Scenic overlooks along Newfound Gap Road

Multiple easy pull-offs for family photo stops and layered mountain views on the drive up.

Easy stop

Bring a light jacket — Kuwohi runs 10–20°F cooler than Gatlinburg even in summer. Kuwohi Road can close in winter for snow and ice, so check conditions before you go.

“Highest point in the Smokies, and it’s a paved walk — no technical hiking required.”
DAY 04

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail

Waterfalls & hidden gems — 5–10 min from Gatlinburg

1

Grotto Falls

A 2.6-mile roundtrip hike to one of the only waterfalls in the U.S. where you can walk behind the falls.

Most unique
2

Laurel Falls

A popular 2.6-mile roundtrip, mostly paved, leading to an 80-foot waterfall.

Closed for rehab through ~July 2026 — check nps.gov/grsm
3

The one-way scenic loop itself

Historic log cabins and forest scenery line the drive, with easy access right from Gatlinburg.

Arrive before 9am — parking at Grotto Falls fills quickly during spring, summer, and fall.

“We walked behind a real waterfall — one of the only places in the country you can do that.”
DAY 05

Pigeon Forge

Family fun day — 15 min from Gatlinburg

1

The Island in Pigeon Forge

Rides, shopping, fountain shows, and mountain views — a full evening’s worth of things to do in one walkable spot.

2

Mountain Coaster

A family-friendly thrill ride you control the speed on, with mountain views the whole way down.

3

Dollywood or The Old Mill

Dollywood is an award-winning theme park with rides and live entertainment. The Old Mill is a historic restaurant known for Southern comfort food and a great family atmosphere.

Pick one

Choose ONE major attraction for the day. Trying to fit Dollywood, The Island, the coaster, and shopping all in one day usually feels rushed. Local favorites: breakfast at Crockett’s Breakfast Camp, dinner at The Old Mill Restaurant, dessert at The Old Mill Creamery.

“After four days in the park, one day of rides and ice cream was exactly the reset our kids needed.”

Planning Notes

  • Stay in Gatlinburg the whole trip — it’s the most central base and saves you from packing up mid-week.
  • No park entrance fee, but a parking tag is required for vehicles parked longer than 15 minutes in the park.
  • Download the free NPS Smokies app before you arrive — it works without cell signal.
  • Check trail and road conditions before each day, especially Kuwohi Road and the Laurel Falls closure status.
  • Bonus stops if you have extra time: Elkmont Ghost Town, Greenbrier, Foothills Parkway, and Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area.
