Book a Guided Tour or Boat Cruise

Red Bus tours, boat cruises, and the Grinnell Glacier boat shortcut sell out in summer. See my picks on the Top Experiences in Glacier page and book early.

Three days is enough to fall hard for this place. Do the west side on day one, cross the most beautiful road in America on day two, and save the best hike — Grinnell Glacier — for last. You’ll leave already planning the trip back.

The 3-Day Plan at a Glance

This route front-loads the west side, crosses Going-to-the-Sun Road on day two, and finishes at Many Glacier — the park’s most spectacular valley, open again in 2026. Stay two nights near Lake McDonald / Whitefish and one night on the east side to avoid re-driving the pass.

Day 01 · West Side

Lake McDonald & Avalanche Lake

Ease in on the forested west side and get your first alpine-lake payoff.

Avalanche Lake ringed by waterfalls in Glacier National Park

West Entrance · Apgar Village

Lake McDonald & the colored pebbles

Enter at West Glacier and stop at Apgar on Lake McDonald — the park’s biggest lake, famous for the red, green, and blue stones glowing under clear water. Dip your feet, rent a kayak, or just soak up the first mountain view.

Avalanche Creek · 4.6 mi round trip · 500 ft · Easy–Moderate

Trail of the Cedars + Avalanche Lake

The best easy hike in the park: an old-growth cedar boardwalk that branches up a gorge to a waterfall-ringed alpine lake. Get there before 9am for parking, or ride the shuttle.

Lake McDonald Lodge · Evening

Sunset at the lodge

Close the day at the 1913 Lake McDonald Lodge dock for sunset over the water, or take an evening boat cruise. Book Logan Pass shuttle tickets for tomorrow the moment they drop at 7pm.

Day 02 · Going-to-the-Sun Road

Logan Pass & the Full Sun Road

The crown of the trip — 50 cliff-hanging miles over the Continental Divide.

Hidden Lake from Logan Pass in Glacier National Park

Start by 7am

Climb the west half

Leave early to beat the Logan Pass parking rush. Stop at Bird Woman Falls Overlook, the Weeping Wall, and The Loop — every pullout is a photo.

Logan Pass · Hidden Lake: 2.8 mi · 460 ft · Easy

Hidden Lake Overlook

At 6,646 ft, Logan Pass is the high point. Mind the 2026 rules — 3-hour parking limit, free kiosk permit for the dashboard, lots full by mid-morning. Walk the wildflower boardwalk to Hidden Lake Overlook, past mountain goats and bighorn sheep.

East side · St. Mary Lake

Wild Goose Island & St. Mary Falls

Descend past the Jackson Glacier Overlook to the Wild Goose Island Overlook — the most photographed view in the park — then stretch your legs on the St. Mary & Virginia Falls hike (2.4–3.8 mi). Overnight on the east side near St. Mary.

Day 03 · Many Glacier

Grinnell Glacier Finale

Save the best for last — the most scenic valley in the park, fully open again in 2026.

2026 update: Many Glacier is back

The Swiftcurrent construction of 2024–2025 is complete. Many Glacier is fully open with 339 parking spaces — but it’s the busiest trailhead in the park, so arrive early.

Many Glacier · Grinnell Glacier: 10.6 mi · 1,600 ft · Strenuous

Hike to Grinnell Glacier

Climb past Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine to an iceberg-flecked basin beneath the glacier — turquoise water, waterfalls, and big views the whole way. The two-boat combo across both lakes trims about 3.4 miles if you’d rather not do the full distance. Carry bear spray; this is prime grizzly country.

Shorter option · ~7.2 mi via boat

Prefer a lighter day? Grinnell Lake

Not up for the full glacier climb? Take the boats and walk the gentle path to Grinnell Lake instead — the same glacial-blue water without the elevation. Or ride the Highline Trail from Logan Pass if you’d rather stay west.

Many Glacier Hotel · Before you go

A drink on Swiftcurrent Lake

Toast the trip on the deck of the 1915 Many Glacier Hotel, with Grinnell Point mirrored in the lake. Watch the hillsides at dusk for moose and bears before the drive out.

🎒 What to Pack for Glacier

Layers for cold Logan Pass mornings and warm valley afternoons, grippy trail shoes, and bear spray for Many Glacier. My full tested list lives on the gear guide.

Planning Notes & 2026 Trip Tips

  • No vehicle reservation in 2026. Drive Going-to-the-Sun Road anytime — the constraint is Logan Pass parking.
  • Logan Pass: 3-hour parking limit (Jul 1–Sep 7). Arrive before ~7:30am or ride the ticketed shuttle booked on Recreation.gov ($1/person, 60 days out or the 7pm daily drop).
  • Carry bear spray parkwide, especially in Many Glacier. Buy or rent in-park — you can’t fly with it.
  • The park is cashless. Bring a card.
  • Book lodging 12–13 months ahead; in-park lodges sell out fast. See Where to Stay in Glacier.

Glacier 3-Day Itinerary FAQ

Is 3 days enough for Glacier National Park?

Yes — three days covers the essential Glacier: the Lake McDonald west side, the full Going-to-the-Sun Road with Logan Pass, and the Many Glacier valley with Grinnell Glacier. You’ll miss quieter corners like Two Medicine, but you’ll see the icons.

Do I need a reservation to drive Going-to-the-Sun Road in 2026?

No. Glacier dropped vehicle reservations for 2026. You can drive the road freely, but Logan Pass has a 3-hour parking limit and a ticketed shuttle (booked on Recreation.gov) for July 1 through September 7.

Is Many Glacier open in 2026?

Yes. The Swiftcurrent construction is finished and Many Glacier is fully open in 2026 with expanded parking. It’s the highlight of day three.

Should I do the west side or east side first?

West side first. This route starts at Lake McDonald, crosses to the east on day two, and ends at Many Glacier — so you’re never re-driving the pass and you finish near the eastern exit.
